BENEFITS OF TERRAZZO:
Durability
Considered so durable that it often outlasts the building it resides in, terrazzo can withstand years of punishing traffic while maintaining its performance. Perfect for high traffic areas, terrazzo doesn’t wear out, is virtually impervious to water, and because of its seamless installation, is perfect for hospitals and other areas where sanitary conditions are at a premium.
Elegance
The elegance and beauty of terrazzo is a crafted blend of fine quality materials such as marble, quartz, granite, and glass, fused in composition with cement or epoxy, ground, and polished to provide a smooth, durable composite flooring solution.
Functionality
Resinous flooring, while also being durable like terrazzo flooring, serves as the perfect flooring for environments that often face extreme conditions. It can withstand environments of extreme hot and cold, as well as corrosion. It is often used in pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and food processing plants because of its ability to inhibit the reproduction of microorganisms and less odor during installation as well as being slip resistant.
Versatility
If you can imagine it, the artisans at Platinum can create it. Because of its composition, terrazzo is supremely customizable. Any color, any design—from official seals and logos, to geometric patterns—both indoor and outdoor.
Sustainability
One of the original “green” products, Terrazzo dates back more than 1,500 years when it was created by Venetian workers using discarded marble chips.
Today’s Platinum installations embrace that same reuse/recycle ethic by utilizing recycled content and low-emissions epoxy to create floors that are extremely durable and easy to maintain. Corporations, hospitals, schools, airports, and government buildings all turn to Platinum for their sustainable flooring needs.

East Side Access
Project Description:
Platinum was contracted for East Side Access, one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United States. The new concourse extends LIRR from its Main Line in Queens into a new station under Grand Central Terminal on Manhattan’s East Side. Platinum has been monitoring and performing comprehensive site walkthroughs that coincide with detailed work plans since 2015 when the contract was awarded. A project of this magnitude, occurring hundreds of feet under one of the busiest neighborhoods in all of Manhattan, presents enormous and unique logistical and oversight challenges. Platinum’s leadership team has worked side by side with the GCT JV, AECOM, and MTA Design teams to create a cost-efficient and functional concourse that will last a lifetime. The 93,000 SF of Terrazzo flooring with integral cove base and sixty-seven integral precast columns span two contracts between the original GCT JV scope and the newly awarded/completed JP Morgan Chase 270 Park footprint repositioning. The Terrazzo flooring system incorporated a flexible epoxy membrane which aids suppression of reflective cracking and vibration insulation; a hugely important mitigation feature for projects installed in transit terminals.
An impressive amount of detail has been incorporated into this project including floor designs to represent the street location of each escalator in the NY state colors of blue and yellow, guiding all visitors in the right direction. A total of thirteen colors were installed in this legacy project after a multi-year sample process to identify the perfect combination of colors and aggregates from around the world. The flexibility and versatility of designing with Terrazzo will be sure to help leave a lasting impression of New York City for all passengers passing through the new transportation expansion.

Mt. Sinai
Project Description:
As part of Mt. Sinai’s ongoing mission to provide around-the clock pediatric, adult and geriatric emergency care, the Mount Sinai Emergency department underwent a renovation and expansion. This fast-paced project was an essential investment to improve conditions during a critical time for New York City, the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Platinum installed over 7,000 SF of an intricate contemporary layout on the ground floor of the new Mount Sinai Emergency Department and great care was taken to avoid disruption to the healthcare staff and patients. With the new challenges of COVID-19, Platinum had to develop site specific protocols for our entire workforce to keep our employees’ health and safety a top priority. Moreover, Terrazzo is chosen for its antibacterial, hygienic, and stain-resistant properties making it a great sanitary flooring option. Since Terrazzo is nonporous, it does not support the growth and spread of bacteria making it a premier choice for healthcare facilities which require constant disinfecting and sterilizing.

Project Description:
Over a period of two years, Platinum worked with Ennead Architects and Turner Construction to complete the immense undertaking of installing 50,000 sq. ft. of terrazzo flooring, including the main entrance, a precast feature staircase leading up to the second floor, and the second-floor connector of the NYU Langone Medical Center, and all elevator lobbies through the tower. Additionally, 77,000 sq. ft. of resinous flooring systems were simultaneously installed including the operating rooms on all medical floors. Platinum displayed the capacity to install complicated designs in a time-efficient manner with crews of up to 25 men each day working two shifts. Furthermore, the Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital entrance was custom designed to be attention grabbing and welcoming for all children stepping through the doors.

AMEX Centurion Lounge
Project Description:
Working with Holt Construction, our team recently completed a job for the AMEX Centurion Lounge located at LaGuardia Airport which followed a similar design and installation at our previously completed AMEX Centurion Lounge at JFK Airport. The project consisted of poured in place Terrazzo, precast tile Terrazzo in the lounge, and a resinous system in the kitchen and bar area to match the lounge’s sophisticated and tasteful design details.
Not only is the design of Terrazzo aesthetically pleasing for the many travelers that pass through the terminals and lounges of New York’s airports, but it is also a material often used in airports due to its sustainability, long-life cycle and durability to combat high levels of foot traffic. Terrazzo’s superior durability and ease of maintenance, help high-end clients maintain the luster of a new floor.

Rolex
Project Description:
Platinum was proud to be part of another flagship store opening in New York City’s trendy Meatpacking District for Tourneau’s Rolex/Tudor boutique. The project began at the onset of the worldwide raw material shortage. Due to Platinum’s experience and relationships with our vendors, we were able to order materials outright and largely avoid the supply chain challenges that have impacted many others across the industry.
Our installation included 2,200 SF of custom Terrazzo flooring throughout the store including steps, landings, eight precast tread riser units, and a sawtooth wall for Rolex’s display cases. Terrazzo is highly regarded for its elegance, endless design capabilities and the flexibility it gives architects and interior designers. Working with the architectural design specialist from Rolex USA and the director of store design and construction for Torneau, our custom designs required extreme detail and attention to ensure satisfaction with the end product. Countless samples were made in order to finetune an epoxy equivalent to a cement Terrazzo sample provided from Italy.
